7 Drawbacks of Studying Online

There was once a time when students had to travel to far away places to get a good education. They sometimes had to travel for days and even months to reach their desired destination to seek education. However, as time passed, the latest inventions made distances shorter. Today you can get a good education in an online school over the internet. Computers have made it possible for you to get an education from the comfort of your home. However there are many things about an online school that still haven’t been ironed out probably this is one reason why education in an online school is not thought to be as good as a regular, offline education.
We’ve listed below seven of the issues we find central to studying through an online school. This is by no means an exhaustive list, and is not intended to completely discourage studying through an online school system; but rather, this is something every online school student should consider before embarking on an online education.
- Certain fields of education can’t be studied online. Medicine, engineering, and other fields like these are just a few fields of education which an online school cannot fully address. The main reason is that these are practice fields where the stress is on practical rather than just theoretical education. A student in an online school might be able to watch a video of a dissection but until a student is able to properly perform a dissection in the presence of a professional doctor he won’t know exactly what he is doing wrong. So medical education in an online school does have its limitations.
- Many online schools lack accreditation. Many online schools might offer a good education but they might not be adequately accredited. You might still earn a degree in an online school but that degree is not going to help you get a job. The reason is that employers seek employees from accredited educational institutions. However the good news is thatyou can find a well accredited online school but you need to be aware if the accreditation that the online school has is recognized in your state or country.
- Online school opens avenues for more fraud. There are many online schools operating out of third world countries and sometimes, even an online school in the first world may promise a good education and a degree that will be recognized but all they do is take your money in return for nothing.
- The teacher isn’t around. Studies have shown that under the presence of a teacher a student may perform better. This is because a student will be pushed by his or her teacher to perform better and harder. This cannot be seen on an online school.
- It takes discipline to attend online schools. Many people don’t have the discipline to sit in front of their computers to take classes or study on a daily basis so they don’t perform as well as their offline counterparts.
- Internet doesn’t exist in many countries. For people in countries with slow or non-existent internet, it becomes very difficult if not outright impossible to acquire an online school education.
- Can’t compare to other students. In a class, you can be competitive, and you can easily tell how other students are doing; but online, you can’t.
Online schools are a great option if they fit your needs and resources, and if you can benefit from them. But don’t get caught up in the hype–do your research before you enroll to avoid getting stuck in something you won’t benefit from.
