DeVry University: DeVry’s Online School

In the past twenty years, the DeVry University, aka the DeVry Institute of Technology, has seen growth far surpassing any other online school.
DeVry is different from many online schools in that its online school represents the minority portion of its business; DeVry was a technical training school long before they held classes online.
Gone are the days where DeVry was a place for individuals who’d washed out of college or opted not to go, because DeVry is now an online school powerhouse on par with the University of Phoenix and
Walden University.
DeVry is considered a public university first and online school second, so anyone with the money can attend. DeVry University has also retained its technical training schools while adding them apart of DeVry Online, so students can obtain technical training certificates primarily through online schooling.
Negatives:
- The reputation of DeVry as a less-than-adequate institution has been somewhat solidified by former students who’ve been unable to find work in anything except for low-level technology positions upon graduation from the online school.
- The DeVry University has been engaged in two class action suits in 1996 and 2002; students of these respective campuses alleged poor education quality and felt they’d been ripped off.
- Because DeVry University exists as a solid entity as well as an online school, it’s usually necessary to attend some of the classes for a degree/certificate in person.
- For the whole of DeVry’s existence online school existence, graduates have questioned if the cram-learning style of DeVry allows for proper retaining of the knowledge when entering the real world.
- The real world’s perception DeVry and DeVry’s online school varies. For example, a DeVry game design degree obtained through DeVry University’s online school generally isn’t worth the paper that its written on, as many employers within that field prefer an applicant to have a Computer Science degree from a traditional college instead of an online school.
Positives:
- On the other end of that spectrum, those with Air Conditioning certificates may have no trouble finding employment after graduating from a DeVry online school course, and those already working in industrial fields are likely to be given a raise within six months given their new knowledge and certification.
- DeVry University best benefits those who do not seek to join a traditional college and obtain technical school training.
- This is due to DeVry University’s public perception as an online school/solid entity hybrid far more than the actual skills of its online school graduates, as DeVry was not always a University.
- The online school classes are of a very high caliber, almost to the point where some former students have complained about the difficulty of learning about biotechnology online within a semester.
Overall, the industry perception of The DeVry University is that it’s more of a degree mill than an online school, and an easy way out, which gives graduates a black-eye before they’ve even applied for a job; although clearly, some of its courses and programs are excellent.
DeVry has over fifty campuses across the country and all of them and all of these campuses offer and online school. As an online school, attendees shouldn’t expect a great deal of interaction with their teachers, and this is considered a common complaint amongst students.
The courses contain years-worth of information crammed into rushed classes, so if you become an online school student with DeVry, expect to work hard.
