Transfering to an online school is not as easy as you think!

Are you looking to go into an online school? With the world of the internet playing such an important role in the live of everyone around the world, it was only natural that there would be a way to get schooling online as well. The internet allows us to be anywhere around the globe and still keep in touch with everyone else no matter how far away they are. An online school also allows us to continue working while we earn our degree from home. In fact, according to the research firm Eduventures, the rate of online attendance grew over 38% just in 2004 alone, and now those rates have skyrocketed. However, going to an online school can be very different than a traditional offline school. Here is a check list of things you need to consider in order to have a good transition from your offline school to your online school.

  1. Time management: When you go to an online school you will find that you must quickly learn how to manage your time. At a traditional school you would have to go to classes that were well planned out as to how much time was spent learning. However, at an online school you will be attending virtual classes from home. Often times people get too comfortable while at home and either forget to attend the virtual class or they do not spend enough time doing other work that will need to be done for online classes. So be sure to learn how to manage your time at home.
  2. Asking for help: Attending an offline school is something that most everyone has experience. When you need help in class or after class it is very simple to just go and speak to the professor. However, you will find that with an online school it is not as simple as raising your hand. For some schools you may need to add your question to all the others into a MSN-Messenger-type platform. Or in order to ask for help you may need to e-mail your professor. Either way you may not get a response right away which can be frustrating.
  3. Just remember to relax and have patience as your questions will get answered. Try to contact your online school before you enroll to see what the policies are on such issues. This will really help you prepare for that transition to your online school.
  4. Student interaction: This is another transition complication you may face online. One of the greatest things about attending school is being able to interact with your peers. But there is a big difference on how you interact online. You will find that most all your interaction will be via a chat service either run by the online school or a designated outside chat service. Just remember that there will be many that are attending that online school who are just like you and will appreciate your situation.
  5. Learning anywhere and any time: What really trips up people when they are first transitioning from an offline school to an online school is the fact that they can learn anywhere at any time. A person gets use to a very structured educational experience and it can be hard to get out of that mindset. So when you begin attending your online school try and remember to really enjoy the experience. You can be anywhere you want like at the beach, on vacation, or even do work while on break at your current job. Attending an online school really frees up your life.

What other mental hurdles have impeded your progress after transitioning to an online school?
