TDSB is innovating to provide an almost purely-online experience to its students; a virtual school of sorts. You can take purely online classes during the summer. Parents are involved at every step; all you need is a short orientation seminar or class, and you're ready to go!

Lately, educators and school districts throughout North America have been looking for innovative ways to keep students not only interested in what’s going on in their schools but also in school altogether. The Toronto School Board District’s fascinating online school experiment is just one way they’re doing so by combining an actual in-school education experience along with a way to receive instruction while at home, and from a real online school.

For many students, this can make for an ideal situation. They can go to school for part of the day or even stay completely at home — during the summer months — and access quality educational instruction in a real online school environment. It can also be a way for parents to help their children atttend a real summer school but without actually having to go to a traditional brick-and-mortar institution. Here are a few characteristics that demonstrate how an online school run by the school district works:

Children register for the online school experience and are then approved for participation

The school district develops appropriate curricula and the teachers and administrators responsible for overseeing it meet with the parents of children involved in the online school

Students begin instruction after an orientation seminar or short class given within the real-world school and then followed up by online tutorials

Parents are involved along every step of the process and teachers communicate regularly with parents whose children attend the online school

Instruction can be completely online or partially online and partially at a real-world school

Toronto School Board District (TBSD) is running a true “virtual school.” The proper name for what TBSD is trying to accomplish is “virtual school,” of course, but it’s easier to remember that it’s an online school because the main educational thrust is aimed at producing a quality educational experience that’s delivered almost exclusively online.

Online schools show great promise. For summer school students and their parents, this can be a very good way to learn a great many more things than is possible in a more traditional summer school setting, where classes are limited or are aimed more at remedial “catch up” classes than at true learning in a “classroom without walls.” A real online school experience is only limited by the desire of the school and the parents to come together to agree on curricula, it would seem.

The TBSD offers other mixes of traditional classroom and computer-based learning (one of which is known as e-Learning), but these aren’t a full online school experience. Most are aimed at learning in centers established within a school, though most classes are given mainly through computer, with in-person teacher monitoring. In an online school learning environment, education is delivered almost exclusively at home or elsewhere and through a student’s computer.

It’s heartening to learn that school districts are beginning to look at the online school as a way to more fully involve parents — who can be at home to monitor their child’s learning — with the students and the school. An online school, for example, used instead of traditional summer school at this point, can be the perfect trial mechanism to see just how far the concept can be taken.

If you’re enrolled in TDSB’s virtual school, let us know how it’s going! We’d love to get real feedback.

In the past twenty years, the DeVry University, aka the DeVry Institute of Technology, has seen growth far surpassing any other online school.

DeVry is different from many online schools in that its online school represents the minority portion of its business; DeVry was a technical training school long before they held classes online.

Gone are the days where DeVry was a place for individuals who’d washed out of college or opted not to go, because DeVry is now an online school powerhouse on par with the University of Phoenix and
Walden University.

DeVry is considered a public university first and online school second, so anyone with the money can attend. DeVry University has also retained its technical training schools while adding them apart of DeVry Online, so students can obtain technical training certificates primarily through online schooling.

      Negatives:

The reputation of DeVry as a less-than-adequate institution has been somewhat solidified by former students who’ve been unable to find work in anything except for low-level technology positions upon graduation from the online school.

The DeVry University has been engaged in two class action suits in 1996 and 2002; students of these respective campuses alleged poor education quality and felt they’d been ripped off.

Because DeVry University exists as a solid entity as well as an online school, it’s usually necessary to attend some of the classes for a degree/certificate in person.

For the whole of DeVry’s existence online school existence, graduates have questioned if the cram-learning style of DeVry allows for proper retaining of the knowledge when entering the real world.

The real world’s perception DeVry and DeVry’s online school varies. For example, a DeVry game design degree obtained through DeVry University’s online school generally isn’t worth the paper that its written on, as many employers within that field prefer an applicant to have a Computer Science degree from a traditional college instead of an online school.

      Positives:

On the other end of that spectrum, those with Air Conditioning certificates may have no trouble finding employment after graduating from a DeVry online school course, and those already working in industrial fields are likely to be given a raise within six months given their new knowledge and certification.

DeVry University best benefits those who do not seek to join a traditional college and obtain technical school training.

This is due to DeVry University’s public perception as an online school/solid entity hybrid far more than the actual skills of its online school graduates, as DeVry was not always a University.

The online school classes are of a very high caliber, almost to the point where some former students have complained about the difficulty of learning about biotechnology online within a semester.

Overall, the industry perception of The DeVry University is that it’s more of a degree mill than an online school, and an easy way out, which gives graduates a black-eye before they’ve even applied for a job; although clearly, some of its courses and programs are excellent.
DeVry has over fifty campuses across the country and all of them and all of these campuses offer and online school. As an online school, attendees shouldn’t expect a great deal of interaction with their teachers, and this is considered a common complaint amongst students.
The courses contain years-worth of information crammed into rushed classes, so if you become an online school student with DeVry, expect to work hard.

Or did we miss the mark completely? Did your experience at DeVry’s online school vary? Drop a comment and share it with us.

Being a parent with a child who attends an online school can be challenging--because their attention can naturally begin to drift. It's hard to be self-motivated.

Being a parent with a child who attends an online school can be challenging; not because children is hard to teach or they don’t want to learn, but because their attention can naturally begin to drift. And one of the major hurdles of stuyding in an online school is that it requires a lot of self-discipline. How can parents keep their children, who are studying in an online school, on track?
The parent has the edge over the public school teacher in that a child has an inherent love for a parent and a desire to please—in other words, if the parent speaks, the child wants to listen.
The parent teaching a child is the voice and opinion which matters the most, so it’s important to use that when doling out lessons and promoting good study practices in child. In an online school environment, the parent has a bigger role to play.
Coupled with that, here are five other ways to keep children attentive for the entirety of a day of online school:

The Heart to Heart: A heartfelt conversation with an online school student about the parent’s expectations, desires, and beliefs won’t go over a kid’s head.
Children are smarter than many give them credit for, and words of encouragement from a parent are the most valuable thing that children can receive. If an parent believes that a child can conquer anything, that child will believe it, also.

Testing/Observation: In an online school or out of it, simple observation of children can literally be the difference between life and death.
A good technique is to test children weekly on the material studied that week, and as the child expects a test coming, they will build up a repetition of know how to best prepare and retain focus as they do.

“One Step At A Time:” Depending on the online school, the pace may be more than the child can handle. Break each part of the project into steps for them so that they can focus on one thing at a time; their overall focus will be much better this way.

Milestones and Time Management: limits are cornerstones of adult online school; online school for children is no different. When you treat a child like a responsible adult, that is exactly what they will grow to become.
Teach your children to set their own goals and to plan out their day and their week. This will help them cope with assignments from different classes and manage their online school workload.

Lots of Breaks: I learned as a child—just as a child should learn, that the brain is like any other muscles in the body, and just like weightlifting, the more rest the brain gets, the better it functions. If you want an attentive child, don’t let your child break the limits of their attention span, and always take a break when it seems like they are losing focus. If they can’t focus, they won’t retain anything they’ve studied, anyway.

But keep within limits! Children should not over-indulge in entertainment; and being in an online school gives you more flexibility to do so. So stay within reasonable limits.

What other techniques do you use to keep your student on the straight-and-narrow in their online school studies? Drop us a comment and let us know!

In September 2009, four schools will be making one of the most controversial, even somewhat applauded moves in online school history by forming the network known as The Online School for Girls.

As the name implies, these schools will be restricted in attendance to K-12 girls interested in taking classes online and only students from the four-school consortium will be able to take classes, and the online schools supporters believe this segregation is necessary because girls learn different from boys.

This article is does not exist to condemn or laud the decision of the four participating online schools; that is for you, the reader, to decide.

The purpose of this online-school centric article is to provide information regarding each online school and their beliefs on online school segregation so that you may make your own informed decision. Is this sexism, or smarter online school education?

Are they helping female online students or hurting female students? It’s your call.

Harpeth Hall School: Established in 1951 and with a 100% college matriculation rate, Nashville, TNs Harpeth Hall all-girls prep school could be considered one of the top prep schools in the United States.
Harpeth Hall is ecstatic at the creation of the Online School for Girls, with their website jovially reporting about the Online School For Girls, Now everyone has the opportunity to go to a girls school.
Harpeth Hall Online School will be offer math, the sciences, and humanities for the opening year of the Online School for Girls, with several other classes planned for the 2010-2011 school year if this online school year is a success.

Holton-Arms School: “I will find a way or make one” is the motto of Bethesda, MDs Holton-Arms School. This all-girl prep school is considered the best in Maryland; quite possibly the East Coast.
It has an extremely esteemed history, with First Ladies Susan Ford and Jacqueline-Kennedy Onassis among the past student roster. Yearly tuition is $27,000.
Holton-Arms will offer six online classes for the 2009-2010 year, and Gazette.net quotes the Holton-Arms technology director as stating about their online school ventures: E-learning for us is something that’s part of an emerging trend, a natural next step.

Laurel School: Cleveland, Ohio’s high-caliber and dual-campus Laurel School, established in 1896, is one of the best K-12 schools in the US for technology.
The Laurel School is partially known for having a rather selective admission process, and the Laurel School is also home to the Center for Research on Girls, which was one of the first groups of the consortium to conceptualize the Online School for Girls.
After aiding in the conceptualization, The Laurel School volunteered to be part of the program. The Laurel School is very open-minded and dispels the anti-male stereotype of all-girls schools; they encourage the young ladies to form relationship with young gentlemen as they can.
The Laurel is a very socially-intelligent school at its core and will offer two online school courses for its pilot year as an online school.

Westover School: Connecticut’s Westover School, with an endowment of over $42,000,000, Westover is one of the richest schools in the US. Connecticut’s Westover School, with an endowment of over $42,000,000, Westover is one of the richest schools in the US.

Westover is located in an upscale region of Stamford, CT, and is notable for producing excellent young female artists and actresses. They will offer two classes this September when the Online School for Girls opens, and are already supremely confident that the Online School for Girls will be successful.

There you have it; four of the most prestigious girls school in the US forming an elite consortium of online school consisting of the best, the brightest and the wealthiest.

Anyone who considers going to online school has a few questions; luckily most of them are the same as everyone else’s. Let’s see if we can’t answer a few

Q: Isn’t Online School just a term for Degree Mill?
A: Not at all! The number of online schools has grown by at least 27% between 2002 and 2009, all of them reputable, many with distinguished graduates who’ve gone on to make over $200,000 a year. A few degree mills may act like an online school, but by checking for accreditation, it’s easy to spot a real school from a fake.

A: How hard is the coursework?
A: It varies per school and per person. Some find that DeVry Tech has very difficult classes while other alumni claim they were easy; a good rule of thumb is that the more reputable the school is, the more you will learn in the class. Coursework overall is on par with campus schooling in terms of difficulty.

Q: What is the amount of teacher-student interaction?
A: Low, for the typical online school. The professor exists primarily to give and grade work, learning the material is usually up to the student.

Q: What kind of degrees can I get online?
A: A great many! Some online schools offer coursework for everything from game design to IT, graphics design to law. Some career fields are so distinct that they must have some hands on; you won’t become a surgeon through an online school even though you can take a few pre-med classes.

Q: What is the quality of online school classes?
A: The same as campus-college, given that many online school professors are campus-college professors.

Q: Are the course schedules as flexible as I hear they are?
A: Yes! In an online college, the coursework is usually displayed on a website your class must frequent, and a due date is given.

Q: What are the primary differences between an online school and a regular university which offers coursework online?
A: Many. One of the key differences between and online school and a university with online classes is the fact that most universities will still require some classes to be taken in person to obtain a degree, unlike a distance-learning online school.

Q: Can I really get a degree with an online school in 2 years?
A: Yes! But just like any other school, it depends on your course load. You could graduate from almost any college in 2 years with the right course load. Remember this as it pertains to online school: they are real, functioning universities. It’s very much common for people to get degrees from an online school, but many of these people already have a degree, or have fulfilled their general education requirements with a community college or a four-year school. Still, two years, even 18 months is possible.

Q: How much will it cost?
A: About the same as most state-funded universities; though probably less.

Q: Will an online degree help me in the real world?
A: Couldn’t hurt. A degree from an online school may not be seen in the same light as a fancy Ivy League business degree, but a hiring manager isn’t going to turn you down the moment they see an online school degree on your resume. You still stand a better chance of getting a job with an online school degree under your belt than someone with a simple high school diploma, and an online school degree might supply a better chance of getting the job than someone with a military honorable discharge but no college experience.

They're one of the largest online schools; but how do they really fare, if you remove all the marketing hype? You might be surprised when you find out the answer!

It’s hard to find or say something about the online school superstar, the University of Phoenix, that hasn’t been found or said already. The University of Phoenix is by far the largest online school in the United States and one of the largest online schools in the world with a participation program rivaling college distance learning programs such as CLEP while having a course selection as broad as its chief competitor, Walden University.
However, do they have a Walden University level of respect? For all of their style, how much substance does it really have?

Strengths

The University of Phoenix’s online school offers degrees of all levels in Teachers Education, Nursing, Counseling, and Business.

The University of Phoenix is considered one of the best online schools to obtain a masters or doctorate in Teachers Education, and teachers education graduates, and a Teachers Education degree from this online school may be one of the few degrees offered that is taken seriously in the field.

Some of the University of Phoenix’s alumni include Shaquille O’ Neal and Lisa Leslie, and if they can find time to complete an online school degree with the University of Phoenix, anyone can.

The University of Phoenix’s online program is extremely flexible; more than any online school in the United States. While in-person classes may be attended on any of the schools 500 campuses worldwide, more focus is placed into the online school aspect.

The online school tries to do a good job of educating its students, but with a majority part-time staff, there’s only so much attention the professors can give to their students.

For all others, its use at your own risk.

Drawbacks

The University of Phoenix’s public perception, unfortunately, is almost as poor as DeVry University, another online school. Undergraduates of the University of Phoenix are unlikely to have their degree taken seriously post-graduation, which will often result in their getting less-desirable jobs in their chosen field of operation.

For example, I personally know a graduate of the University of Phoenix’s online school who remarked that the University of Phoenix is only good if you already have a job.

This may even be questionable, as the University of Phoenix has a low rate of graduates who achieved raises and/or promotions after obtaining a degree from this online school in comparison to traditional college or even Walden University.

At $12,000 a semester, the University of Phoenix is very expensive, and I’m sorry to say that the money may not be worth it.

An estimated 16.9% of those who apply do not graduate from the school within six years even though they pride and market themselves as a school which applicants can graduate from in 18 months.

Less than 2% graduate in this span of time, and almost all of this percentile were finishing their degree with the University of Phoenix’s online school and started it at a traditional college.

The University of Phoenix is a decent online school, but it doesn’t come close to the real deal as much as it would have its students believe.

If you are or were a University of Phoenix student, how did your experience shape up? Drop a comment and tell us!

How can you make sure your online degree will get you a job? Most people dive into the degree without doing enough homework; but your employer might reject your online school degree. However, there are a few easy things you can do to ensure success--like finding a properly-accredited online school.

Are you about to start attending an online school? If you are then it is important to know a few facts before you choose your online school. All too often people make the mistake of thinking that all schools are created equal when they really are not.

A good example of this is with the schools’ accreditation. Going to an online school that has a recognized accreditation can mean the difference between finding work and staying in the unemployment lines. So before you choose a school be sure to follow these important tips so that you can be sure to get a great job in your new career

Relevance

What will you be going to school for? One of the first important steps you must take before choosing an online school is to see if what you want to do has relevance to the real world. Perhaps you really want to learn about history. While this is an admirable profession to get into, you may want to check first to see what kinds of jobs you can get with that type of degree and whether or not it is feasible.

Accreditation

It is important to ensure that your new online school will have what you need to find a job. And in doing so you need to first ensure that their accreditation is recognized by the proper authorities. However, another little known fact about accreditation is that there are many different organizations that give accreditation to an online school and it will depend on which one they have for your success.

Is your online school accredited by a regional agency? If so then your degree is good for most any job. What’s more, you will find that if you want to transfer to another online school then most will also accept this type of accreditation.

Is your online school accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council? If so then your degree will not be accepted by everyone. For instance, while your degree will be accepted by most employees, there are some colleges that will not accept it as a transfer student. So if you are planning to attend an online school now but transfer credits to continue your education later make sure that your new school will accept your online school degree.

If you are going into a specific profession there are some online schools that are accredited by professional organizations. An example of this is a recognized Paralegal Association. If this is the case then there are employers that will take that type of degree if they are in that particular chosen profession. Also, your degree will be accepted by most traditional colleges.

If your online school is not accredited at all, or it is accredited by an organization that is not recognized by the proper authorities then it is a different story altogether. You will find that not only will most employers not accept your degree but neither will other colleges. So make sure your online school is properly accredited.

Homework

Who ever said there would not be homework before you start at your online school? Once you have figured out what type of accreditation that your chosen online school will have you should always check ahead at any prospective employers to see if they will accept it. This is rarely ever done but perhaps one of the most important steps.

Attending an online school is now becoming more and more accepted in the mainstream world but there are still places that feel that an online degree is not as good as one from a traditional college. And even if you are not sure where you will work after you have gotten your degree you should try to call various places in the profession you will enter just to test the waters.

What other tips do you use to make sure your online school degree gets you a real-world job? Write a comment and let us know.

Toronto District School Board and e-Learning

Are you interested in attending an online school in Canada? Attending an online school is quickly becoming the wave of the future, and many school districts are finally catching on to this fact. A great example of this is the Toronto District School Board. Here is some information about their online school program and how it can benefit students.

TDSB is ranked as the fourth largest school board in North America. This school board covers almost 600 schools and they serve over 250,000 students every year. And because the Toronto District School Board understands the needs of it students to be prepared for the future they now offer online school courses at a highschool level through their e-Learning site. Furthermore, not only is an online school setting important for future educational purposes but for business practices as well. This is because many businesses are now offering further education and training via an online school platform.

When and How?

TDSB offered their eLearning credit courses since September 2009. What they offer is the chance for students and teachers alike to have collaborative and independent learning opportunities in an online classroom. Furthermore, all online school classroom courses will be provided by the Ministry of Education through e-Learning Ontario.

Here is a list of what their courses will entail.

All courses will be taught by TDSB secondary school teachers

These courses will be will be a part of the student’s timetable

Students will be able to see these courses on their transcript when they have completed them

All courses will be compliant with both the TDSB and the Ministry expectations and policies

Benefits of e-Learning as an Online School

There are literally tons of benefits to an online school program such as this. From students being able to partake in classes that would not normally be available to them to students being able to learn in a totally new environment, this online school education will bring participants to a whole new level of learning. Here are a two more benefits of this online school education.

Utilizes current technologies to bring both current and accurate information to students

Allows for the opportunity to resolve any timetable conflicts because it will increase opportunities

Is an Online School Atmosphere for You?

While attending online school classes is an amazing experience, it may not be for every type of student. Here is a list of qualifications that an e-Learning student may possess. A typical e-Learning student should be:

Self motivated and self directed in that they can effectively organize their time without direct supervision

Comfortable using computer technology

Able to work independently

Have access to a computer and the internet

Furthermore, one of the main requirements of students in such a school setting would be that they spend just as much time attending the online school courses as they would in a normal offline school setting.

If you need Ontario-recognized high school credits from an online school, and you think this sounds right for you, check their e-Learning registration page.

Who is the ACBSP?

Who is the ACBSP and what do they have to do with an online school program? Are you looking for an accredited online school to get or finish your degree program? Attendance at an online school is something that is becoming more and more popular with both educational institutions as well as businesses. What used to be frowned upon has finally been recognized as what the future is all about. However, when choosing an online school program it is imperative that you get one that is accredited.

For an online school to be accredited it means that it is recognized for its compliance with various educational stipulati ons. And while there certainly are many schools online that are accredited there are many more that are not. But who does the accreditations? This is a question that many do not think to ask.

A great example of an accreditation association is The Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). In fact, this is the leading accreditation association for business education. This association not only accredits traditional schools and universities but also the online school programs.

In being the top accrediting association for business schools it means that the ACBSP strives to ensure excellence in all areas but especially of teaching. As a student, when your online school is accredited by the ACBSP you can be assured that this school will give you a classroom experience that will truly encourage learning. And as an online school educator you will be guaranteed better recourses. This is simply because the ACBSP can give you many more member benefits than other accreditation associations as well as a larger number of other members to associate with. This also means that they have a much larger staff to help with any issues or questions that may come up.

Other Benefits From ACBSP

ACBSP provides other benefits beyond the above mentioned. These benefits include:

Lower rates for an online school that is joining as well as while they are awaiting accreditation

The ACBSP is the only type of accreditation association that will offer accreditation to an online school that awards associate degrees

A larger base for networking

Increased opportunities for recruitment

There are many things that the ACBSP does that many other accreditation associations do not. A great example of this would be encouraging and helping an online school get dual accreditation. This association understands the need for an online school and other universities to increase their credentials in order to pull in more students. And this advantage to students is essential as recruiting businesses want to see that the education their employees were given was top notch.

Online Schools Accredited by ACBSP

Here is a list of some schools that are accredited by the ACBSP:

Azusa Pacific University

Northwestern College

Tiffin University

So when you are looking to go to an online school for business you will want to make sure that they are accredited by the ACBSP. This will not only afford you with the best online school education but it will also be highly utilized on your resume. And in the end this is what an online school is all about, and every other school of higher learning for that matter.
