Online School vs. E-Learning: Same or Different?

The difference between a pure online high school and an e-learning high school can sometimes be very noticeable and sometimes very subtle. Depending on the school district and the country (for example, a district in the United States versus one in Canada), there might be little difference between an online educational institute and what is sometimes called an “e-learning” high school.
In general, an “online school” is an institute that provides purely online education with all their classes available online only, and e-learning is a traditional, brick-and-mortar offline school with some classes that are available online.
The differences are a bit more subtle in Canada ,and especially up in the province of Ontario when it comes to an online school and an e-learning experience. Sometimes, the Canadian educational system looks at these two terms as being interchangeable. Instructors and educators may often use the terms interchangeably in the course of a single conversation. Not so in the United States, which separates learning in an online environment from learning in a more traditional classroom setting. In fact, there are now complete and entirely online high schools scattered throughout the country.
Characteristics of a Typical Online School
- No matter the country, a real online school will be accredited by a recognized accrediting agency
- An online high school is quite often constituted and run by a local school board; or will work in close conjunction with the educational board; or with the teachers and counselors in a brick-and-mortar high school.
- The virtual environment is rigorous and will require that a student be extremely motivated, highly organized and entirely self-directed.
- Excellent online high schools, whether they’re focused on complete online modalities or they make use of a mix of traditional schooling and e-learning, always make use of accredited and certified curriculums.
E-learning can sometimes be an adjunct that is employed by a real-world high school under certain conditions or times of the year. A typical high school in many modern and technologically savvy districts often has certain courses that it offers that can be done through computer while at home. These are the more “traditional” e-learning opportunities offered by a great many school districts these days. A typical online school, though, is truly an institute “without walls” and is more virtual reality then something that can be touched in a physical sense.
Which educational opportunity is best for a child all depends on the child and how focused the educational district is on delivering a quality online education. Parents and their children need to realize that a true online school can often be as hard (if not harder) than a so-called “regular” school. That’s because there’s an element of discipline and self-motivation on the part of both the parent and child that can be missing when a child need only go to a traditional brick-and-mortar building to receive instruction. With the virtual learning environment, it will be up to the child and his parents to make everything happen. If they cannot stick to a schedule and a timetable, things can often go awry very quickly, so keep that in mind before considering an online environment when it comes to learning opportunities.
