Don't end up in a factory; use accreditation to ensure you can get a job with your online degree

Are you about to start attending an online school? If you are then it is important to know a few facts before you choose your online school. All too often people make the mistake of thinking that all schools are created equal when they really are not. A good example of this is with the school’s accreditation. Going to an online school that has a recognized accreditation can mean the difference between finding work and staying in the unemployment lines. So before you choose a school be sure to follow these important tips so that you can be sure to get a great job in your new career

Relevance

What will you be going to school for? One of the first important steps you must take before choosing an online school is to see if what you want to do has relevance to the real world. Perhaps you really want to learn about art history. While this is an admirable profession to get into, you may want to check first to see what kinds of jobs you can get with that type of degree and whether or not it is feasible.

Accreditation

It is important to ensure that you new online school will have what you need to find a job. And in doing so you need to first ensure that their accreditation is recognized by the proper authorities. However, another little known fact about accreditation is that there are many different organizations that give accreditation to an online school and it will depend on which one they have for your success.

  • Is your online school accredited by a regional agency? If so then your degree is good for most any job. What’s more, you will find that if you want to transfer to another online school then most will also accept this type of accreditation.
  • Is your online school accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council? If so then your degree will not be accepted by everyone. For instance, while your degree will be accepted by most employees, there are some colleges that will not accept it as a transfer student. So if you are planning to attend an online school now but transfer credits to continue your education later make sure that your new school will accept your online school degree.
  • If you are going into a specific profession there are some online schools that are accredited by professional organizations. An example of this is a recognized Paralegal Association. If this is the case then there are employers that will take that type of degree if they are in that particular chosen profession. Also, your degree will be accepted by most traditional colleges.
  • If your online school is not accredited at all, or it is accredited by an organization that is not recognized by the proper authorities then it is a different story altogether. You will find that not only will most employers not accept your degree but neither will other colleges. So make sure your online school is properly accredited.

Homework

Who ever said there would not be homework before you start at your online school? Once you have figured out what type of accreditation that your chosen online school will have you should always check ahead at any prospective employers to see if they will accept it. This is rarely ever done but perhaps one of the most important steps. Attending an online school is now becoming more and more accepted in the mainstream world but there are still places that feel that an online degree is not as good as one from a traditional college. And even if you are not sure where you will work after you have gotten your degree you should try to call various places in the profession you will enter just to test the waters.

So before you jump into just any online school make sure you take work at these tips to make sure you get a great job when you have attained your degree.
