Skills You Need to Survive Online School

There are many different skills you will need to be able to master to succeed on your online school courses. These skills fit into two different categories: technical skills and study skills. Each category has a list of different skill sets that you need to learn to help you with your course, and if you are not already familiar with them, then you will need to try and learn them (in part, at least) before you start your first term at your new online school. We’ll start with technical skills.
Technical Skills
- Ability to Use the Internet: As your course is actually online you will need to know the basic knowledge on how to open a browser page and find your online schools website address. How to navigate that page and how to use the internet in general.
- Email: Email is the newest version of writing someone a letter making it an instant way to communicate with someone. Online school websites when you enroll give you your own school email address so that your colleagues and tutors can mail you with information and so you can keep in touch to discuss things about your course. So being competent enough to use this type of service is a real benefit.
- Attaching Files: Some online schools require you to send in your essays and homework via an attachment. You need to be able to do this so your work can be marked, like wise you need to be able to know how to receive and download an attachment as some tutors at your online school like to send you homework and information using this route.
- Writing Documents/PDFs: Using Microsoft Word is one of the most common office suites used when typing your essays or assignments for your online school course. Being able to cut and paste text and also copy and paste text is a useful skill to learn. Have a practice to make sure you can accomplish this. Also, knowing how to generate PDFs can make your life easier (use OpenOffice or CutePDF).
- File Management: As mentioned above when using Word you need to be able to save your online school work so you don’t loose it to a particular drive on your computer, move this file if needed, copy it and even delete it if necessary. The help part of Word will guide you through all of this if you feel that you do not know enough to manage all of this. Your online school course depends on it.
- Researching and Searching: You need to be able to as part of your online school course be able to research materials and the internet for answers to your questions. You also need to be able to search through your computer quickly to find your online school work. Performing searches and researching you will find is an integral part of online school course.
Study Skills
- Organization: You need to be able to organize yourself and manage your time correctly so that you study enough for your online school course. Having a large calendar that is color coded will help you with this. Be realistic with your time, if you think you can study for x amount of hours then commit to that. If you find you are struggling, juggle things about a bit till you find the right balance.
- Motivation: Being motivated enough to plough through and never give up on, no matter what, your online school course is imperative to you actually completing it. Remember the end goal and remind yourself of this if you find yourself struggling at any point, your online school course matters.
- Time Balance: Time is an important factor in working out your set study times. Your online school course may require you to log on at certain times and making sure that you do this may be an integral requirement of the online school course.
- Written Communication Skills: Your online school course will require you to be able to successfully communicate your thoughts, feelings and answers directly into your essays. Being able to do this you will find is a very important part of the online school requirements. If you have problems within this area your online school will be able to support you with their online school support network.
- Persistence and Determination: Half way through your online school course you may find yourself flagging, being easily distracted more and more and eventually not being bothered at all. This is something you cannot afford to let happen to you. By being persistent and determined you can make a difference in the way you look at your online school course. Your online school will have support pages within its web pages that can help you keep motivated about your online school course. This invaluable network will keep you going until you finally graduate and finish your online school course.
This list is long, but ultimately worth-while. We can’t guarantee success with these skills, but you’ll be hard-pressed to fail if you can pull these off consistently and in a timely manner.
